How can you connect your community to the issue of sexual violence and motivate them to take action? How can you influence and transform their behaviors? By exploring  cutting-edge behavioral science principles, we'll provide you with tools for effective communication, skill-building, and positively shifting people's everyday actions. In addition, we'll share innovative and inclusive tools, including campaign and tabling toolkits, artwork, and workshop games, you can easily implement into your prevention work to creatively engage your communities. These tools will enable your team to work towards fostering a culture of prevention in your communities. 

Presenters:

Esmy Hurtado (They/She), Community Engagement Coordinator    As a first-generation Latine/Chicane, Esmy has dedicated their career to developing and implementing sexual violence prevention programming that addresses the unique needs of communities. They obtained their bachelor's degree in Cellular Molecular Biology from Cal Poly Humboldt, where they served as a peer educator creating bystander intervention curriculum and mentorship programming. Currently, Esmy is pursuing a Master's in Social Work at the University of Denver with an emphasis on health, equity, and wellness. In addition to their professional and academic pursuits, Esmy is deeply committed to supporting BIPOC communities through medical advocacy and advocating for holistic healing methods. They strongly believe that healing is a collective effort and that communities of support are necessary to bring about lasting change.   

Mary Sue Savage (She/Her), Executive Director    Mary Sue has over a decade of experience in college based sexual violence prevention work. She built, from the ground up, the CHECK IT bystander intervention and peer education program at Cal Poly Humboldt. She coordinated the program for 8 years under 3 cycles of the OVW campus grant. In addition, she designed and co-directed one of the first college based violence prevention themed learning communities in the country. She was awarded the Lifelong Achievement Award by the Humboldt Domestic Violence Coordinating Council and the Violence Prevention Championship Award from the CSU Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Conference. She holds an MSW from Boston University and a Bachelor's Degree in Critical Race, Gender and Sexuality Studies from Cal Poly Humboldt.
