Esta conversación tiene como objetivo examinar y reflejar el papel del hombre latino/latix identificado y/o la presentación masculina en el movimiento de violencia de género. Analizar cómo las nociones de género afectan la forma en que los hombres entienden, procesan y articulan sus experiencias de violencia sexual; es crucial comprender cómo los hombres dan sentido a las influencias culturales y el papel que desempeñan en la prevención de las mismas. El panel de conversación tendrá como objetivo ayudar a resaltar su papel, las lagunas y las soluciones creativas y colectivas actuales.
This conversation aims to examine & reflect the role of latine/latix male identified and/or male presenting in the gender based violence movement. Looking into how notions of gender affect the way males understand, process and articulate their experiences of sexual violence; it is crucial to understand how men make sense of cultural influences and the roles they play in the prevention of it. The panel conversation will aim to help highlight their role, gaps and current creative and collective solutions.

Emiliano Diaz de Leon, He/Him/His/El/Su, Men’s Engagement Specialist, Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA) After more than a decade of experience working for several domestic and sexual violence centers across Texas, Emiliano joined the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault in 2008 and provides training and technical assistance on the prevention of domestic/sexual violence to organizations and institutions around the state and country. In addition, Emiliano founded and coordinates the state-wide prevention initiative Texas Men S.P.E.A.K. (Supporting Prevention Education Advocacy & Knowledge).
Jose Juan Lara, Jr., MS Systems & Advocacy Senior Program Manager, The Asian Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence.
Jose Juan Lara, Jr., MS, is the Systems and Advocacy Senior Program Manager at the Asian Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence, Interpretation Technical Assistance & Resource Center (ITARC) works to improve systems responses to limited English proficient victims by providing technical assistance and training on the development and implementation of language access services. Jose Juan has 23 years of experience in cultural competence and responsiveness, dynamics of gender-based violence, LGBTQ, language access, organizational development, and victim advocacy. Jose Juan has presented on these issues in the community and nationally, engaging a broad spectrum of multidisciplinary professionals from criminal justice, social services, policy, and health.
Juan Carlos Areán, Program Director Children and Youth Program, Futures Without Violence.
Juan Carlos Areán, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized activist, public speaker, trainer and facilitator, and published author. Since 1991, he has worked to engage men across different cultures to become better fathers, intimate partners and allies to end domestic violence and achieve gender equity. He presently works as a Program Director at Futures Without Violence. Previously, he served as Director of the National Latin@ Network at Casa de Esperanza and as a Sexual Assault Prevention Specialist at Harvard University.
Dr. Areán was the lead developer of Futures Without Violence’s Fathering After Violence Initiative and Casa de Esperanza’s Campaign Te Invito. He is co-author of various articles, curricula and educational tools for men, including Working With Fathers in Batterer Intervention Programs (Oxford University Press) and Healing and Supporting Fathers: Principles, Practices, and Resources for Fatherhood Programs to Help Address and Prevent Domestic Violence (OPRE). He is a founding member of the United Nations Network of Men Leaders to combat violence against women created by former Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
Dr. Areán has served as an expert in many media outlets, including the New York Times, The New Yorker, Time Magazine, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, the Huffington Post, Medium, CNN en Español, Univisión and Telemundo. He is an active trainer and facilitator, who has led hundreds of workshops and presentations throughout the United States, the Americas and the Caribbean, as well as in Europe, Asia, the US Congress, the White House, and the United Nations in New York and Geneva.
