Description

Join Joyce Aubrey, founder of Finding Our Voices, and long-time advocate for survivors of sexual abuse.  Learn how the creative process releases blocked trauma and facilitates healing as Joyce shares examples of paintings, collages, writings and soft sculptures that contributed to her healing journey. Joyce will share insights from her award-winning memoir, Beyond Aftershocks: Reclaiming Self after Sexual Trauma.

Joyce Aubrey discovered CCASA more than a decade ago, when seeking support for healing from flashbacks to years of CSA. At that time, Joyce engaged a variety of traditional and complementary healing techniques in order to recover her authentic self. Over the years, Joyce has contributed to CCASA as a past member of the Executive Board, has presented at annual conferences and contributed to CCASA Blogs. She served on the Survivor Task Force, modeled in the CCASA Denim Day Fashion Show and testified many times at the legislation to support survivor issues. In 2011, she was the recipient of the first CCASA, Excellence in Advocacy Award. As a speaker, activist, artist, poet, and mentor, she has advocated for survivors at USAFA, Buckley AFB, Survivorship Annual Conference and many mental health, service, and faith groups. From the one-room school where her education began and throughout careers of teaching, counseling, and owner/manager of a fabric shop—she always worked for gender equality and justice for the marginalized and disempowered. Resurrecting her experiences in those earlier careers, in 2009 she created Finding Our Voices, a nonprofit in Colorado Springs that empowers adult survivors of sexual abuse through process art. Joyce believes that supporting other survivors has given meaning to her abuse and purpose to her retirement. Writing as MavaJoyce, she is the award-winning author of Beyond Aftershocks: Reclaiming Self after Sexual Trauma. Marilyn Van Derbur, former Miss America and long-time advocate for survivors endorsed Beyond Aftershocks with the following: “MavaJoyce gently dispels the myth that silence and secrecy are the best way to deal with abuse and trauma”.
